BEYOND LOVE AND WORK: Why Adults Need to Play
While browsing in the library I came across BEYOND LOVE AND WORK: Why Adults Need to Play by Lenore Terr, M.D. (156.6 Ter). Though just at the beginning of the book I have found it interesting.
Here are a couple of quotes:
“We know we are playing when we are suddenly removed from all cares and worries. We know because afterward
we feel cleansed and refreshed, despite our tired bodies, our aching muscles, our sleepiness. The interlude has been a healthy one.
It takes place entirely outside, or at the very edge of, our drive for personal success or survival. Play is …removed.”
“The play I’ve watched my patients indulge in over the years has often been extraordinarily elastic, allowing any number of directions for its expression
and action. Much music and art is play. …Sitting around the family room watching TV with the kids, talking back to the TV set, talking with one another
about the show, is a kind of play. …daydreaming, wishing, toying with ideas ---is play.”
“For an activity to be play, it must be lighthearted. …there is a sense of good-humored, spirited, even sparkling, pleasure. There is an infectiousness to play.
It beacons us to join in.”
One idea I got from the author is that play helps us cope with other, more difficult aspects of our lives.
